PHILLIPS, R.H.

No. 7437, Private, Robert Henry PHILLIPS
Aged 26

1st Battalion, Suffolk Regiment
Killed in Action on Wednesday, 10th February 1915

Robert Henry PHILLIPS was born in Worlington (Mildenhall Q3-1889 4A:705), son of George Pettengil and Mary Ann PHILLIPS (née HUNT)

1891 census... Aged 1 was at The Courtyard, The Street, Worlington with his father George PHILLIPS [38] a platelayer GER, born Mildenhall; his mother Mary Ann [36] born Tuddenham, his brother Richard G. [10] born Mildenhall, brother Thomas [8] born Mildenhall, sister Ann E E [5] born Mildenhall and brother William J [3] born Worlington.

1901 census... Aged 14 he was at The Street, Worlington with his widower father and his brother William J, brother Frank [9] born Worlington and cousin Sarah GOOCH [30] born Cavenham. His mother had died in 1893.

1911 census... Aged 23 he was at Mustapha Pasha Barracks, Alexandria, Egypt, a private in the 1st battalion Suffolk Regiment
His brother Frank was in the Scottish Rifles in South Africa. see here, dying later in the war in Edinburgh.
His father and his father's sister Hannah MOMFORD were still at The Street, Worlington.

His brother Frank's Army records (Living relatives form completed by his father in 1920) have his father in Worlington, his mother Maryann Phillips in Mildenhall, brothers George living in Cherryhinton, Thomas in Haverhill, William Sunderland and sister Ellen JENKINS in London.
All a bit strange since the census of 1901 and 1911 have George as a widower and records show Mary Ann dying in 1893

He enlisted in Mildenhall. His army records have not been found

Early February 1915 the 1st Suffolks were in the Ypres salient near Verbrandenmolen. All day of the 9th they were subjected to heavy shelling. The trenches were two feet deep in water in places. Only two men were killed on the 10th and the battalion returned to Ypres that evening, they were relieved on night of 11/12th to go into billets near Ouderdom.
